In Jakarta, the Sheraton Media Hotel & Towers has been participating in the program with various activities divided into three areas; Guests Engagement, Associates Engagement, and Community Engagement.

Guest Engagement
To engage hotel’s guests, the Sheraton Media Hotel & Towers carries out two activities, which are selling special package called UNICEF Happy Family Package, hosting Antique and Craft Mini Exhibition, which includes donation to the program.

“We have been selling a special package dedicated to families who would like to share happiness with children where 20% of the sales goes to the program. So far, we received tremendous response from our guest with significant room nights sold,“ said Vincentia Maria, Director of Sales & Marketing Sheraton Media Hotel & Towers, Jakarta.

Vincentia continues, “The hotel invites a vendor to host Antique and Craft Mini Exhibition where we display antiques and craft for sale in the hotel’s lobby. About 10 percent of the revenue will be cut off and directly donated to the program.”

Associates and Community Engagement
Aside from selling Happy Family Package and hosting a mini Exhibition, the hotel also encourages its associate to participate in another two main programs, which are selling cookies titled Ngemil & Ngamal and selling second-hand goods.

The hotel produces and sells cookies to associates at an affordable price. Each associate is offered to buy the cookies and encouraged to promote selling them to their families and friends. All proceeds will be donated to the program.

Meanwhile, selling second-hand goods is about encouraging associates to donate their used goods to the hotel. This includes, but not limited to donating toys, dolls and clothes. The hotel will resell the collected used-items to a local thrift shop. All proceeds will go the UNICEF Check-Out for Children Program. Every items not sold will be donated to a local charity organization.

Executive Assistance Manager Sheraton Media Hotel & Towers Algamar Idris said that by involving guests, associates and community in the program, he believes the initiative will truly reflect the idea of helping each other and caring for children.

“It’s time to giveback and supports our community. Though with only a small contribution, we believe that together we can do something to help children pursue their dream,” added Algamar.

About UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge
The UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge is an annual staff fundraising competition between Starwood Hotels which began in 2003 – and continues to gather strong support throughout Starwood Hotels & Resorts in the Asia Pacific region. The Challenge is a chance for all Starwood associates to come up with a creative campaign to raise funds for UNICEF education projects.

The impact of this program is long-lasting; as children of educated mothers are 50% more likely to survive until the age of 5 than those whose mothers didn’t get a chance to go to school.

Funds raised will help UNICEF to build and improve school facilities; provide quality teachers training in impoverished areas and essential school supplies; help children return to schools after emergencies with “School-in-a-box” kits; provide teaching program for ethnic minority areas; communicate awareness of gender and health issues in schools. The global initiative runs from June through end of September 2011.
