PR/Marcom Guys with Journo background

Found this great opinion article about tips on what make PR guys pro. Check it out...

This former journalist (hint, hint) posits four reasons that experience trumps a degree. Do you agree?

In my experience, I've found that the most successful PR people are those who think and act like reporters.
Anyone in sales will tell you that you have to know your customer base. For those of us who toil pitching stories to reporters, it certainly helps—and may be imperative—to have the journalistic background that tells how to define a story, write it and present it. PR is sales, and reporters are the customers.

"KARAKTER MENENTUKAN MASA DEPAN"
Karakter menentukan masa depan kita, mulailah belajar membentuk karakter. Workshop ini akan mempelajari: 1. People Skills Overview - Model Pikiran-Perkataan-Perbuatan - Lima Pertanyaan Self Assessment - Karakteristik Pemenang - Kelebihan dari Winning With People
2. Hal-Hal yang Kita Pikirkan
    - Prinsip Lensa

    - Preferensi Hubungan Pribadi
3. Hal-Hal yang Kita Katakan dan Dengar
    - Hambatan untuk Mendengarkan
    - People Profiling
    - Cara Mendengarkan
    - Demonstrasi Kemampuan Mendengarkan
4. Hal-Hal yang Kita Lakukan
    - Percakapan Rutin
    - Overview Percakapan yang Menarik
    - Bahasa Tubuh
    - Mengidentifikasi Percakapan yang Menarik
    - Mengenali Response Pribadi
    - Menunjukkan Respon Jalan Mendaki

STARWOOD PREFERRED GUEST’S NEW, ‘GO-TO’ APP UNITES ALL STARWOOD BRANDS USING INNOVATIVE STATE-AWARE INTERFACE

Latest SPG app for iPhone® employs state-aware technology to provide personalized customer service, recommendations, bookings and travel information for a seamless, guest-centric experience across the company’s nine distinct brands

Stamford, Conn. – March 2012 – Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), the award-winning loyalty program from Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT), today introduces its new application for iPhone and iPod Touch, which utilizes state-aware technology to create personalized guest experiences across Starwood’s nine distinct brands. The latest development is part of Starwood’s ongoing commitment to tech innovation to meet the needs of today’s connected global traveler—for example, Starwood was the first in the industry to offer FaceTime customer service, a feature that’s built into the new SPG app. The app also includes fully integrated booking, member information, comprehensive hotel searches and travel details, customer service and social media.

Meeting the Needs of Today’s Mobile Traveler
A still-growing trend in the hospitality industry, Starwood’s mobile revenue has increased by more than 300 percent year-over-year, and the company has found that the patterns of travelers using mobile devices to book rooms are markedly different from those of more traditional web bookers. For instance, two-thirds of mobile bookings are within 24 hours of the stay, triple that of web bookings.

“Mobile is a vital part of our business’s future, and it’s fast becoming the preferred way to book travel in both established and emerging markets around the world, such as the United States and China,” said Chris Holdren, Senior Vice President of Starwood Preferred Guest and Digital. “We’ve built the new SPG app to be an all-in-one travel tool that connects our guests with all of the information they need to enhance their experience during their journey with us.”

Following guest feedback and member focus groups, SPG integrated key features into the app instead of directing to an outside mobile browser, creating a faster, more user-friendly experience. New options include the ability to find hotels by airport code or map and a streamlined home screen with “tiles” that are easily tapped or swiped to access frequent requests, such as account information, upcoming stays, customer support and special offers.

State-Aware Interface
The SPG app is the first in the travel industry—and one of the first apps ever—to utilize state-aware technology, creating an interface that unites all nine of Starwood’s distinct lifestyle brands and its nearly 1,100 hotels and resorts; and adjusts the app’s look, feel and content depending on whether the user is planning, en route or already checked in to a specific hotel. Starting 48-hours before a guest is scheduled to arrive at a Starwood hotel or resort, the app sends a push notification; and the “My Stay” interface becomes reflective of the specific brand and property, with home-screen access to key information such as hotel address in both English and the local language, weather, directions and hotel amenities. Once at the hotel, the guest’s stay is enhanced with integrated content such as their room number, on- and off-property dining and activity suggestions, and in-app access to social media channels such as FourSquare and Facebook.

The app also offers an “Explore” tab for discovery when users don’t have a specific destination in mind. Explore provides customized hotel recommendations based on individual preferences such as trip type (e.g., beach, city, wedding), brand, SPG category and interests.

Personalized, Guest-Centric Interface
As part of Starwood’s continued dedication to personalized guest service, the new app includes extensive content that’s easily filtered and customized. Members can use the app to store all relevant information about their SPG profile and upcoming and past stays, as well as send hotel confirmation or other details to anyone via text or email. And, it incorporates location-based services to connect users, as needed, to the closest customer care center, in addition to a live FaceTime support option.

“The new SPG app will help us build even deeper relationships with our loyal guests and provide them with relevant content not only while on-property but also before and after they stay with us,” said Mark Vondrasek, Senior Vice President, Starwood Distribution, Loyalty & Partnerships. “The app is carefully calibrated to reflect the SPG brand as well as the unique personality of each hotel but, more importantly, to reflect what’s most important to each guest. While some users will love tapping through the gorgeous hotel photos and reading the rich content, others will use the app strictly for practical purposes; and the app lets them customize their own experience.”

Starwood’s mobile team partnered with Bottle Rocket to design and develop the SPG app—resulting in smart, intuitive navigation that seamlessly integrates SPG and hotel-specific branding into the iPhone’s famously user-friendly interface. The app, currently available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad or at www.spg.com/iphoneapp, is the latest development in SPG’s evolution into a hyper-personalized guest services platform (earlier this month, SPG unveiled a suite of elite member benefits, including 24-hour check-in, access to a Starwood ambassador, confirmable upgrades and free breakfast). Currently available in English worldwide, the SPG app will be updated throughout 2012 with additional versions in Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and the Romance languages; and new devices such as the iPad.

Sales & Marketing New Year’s Resolution

Perhaps it’s too late to propose a New Year’s Resolution. But it’s better than nothing.

For ones that get used to the habit of New Year’s Resolution, stating or writing the resolution is something ordinary.

But to me, writing a New Year’s Resolution is something special. As I realize, I even never say a single New Year’s Resolution in my life before. Though, committing to implement the contents of a resolution is another story. So here I come with New Year’s Resolution on Sales & Marketing.

If you don’t have resolution that focuses on Sales & Marketing, I guess it is worth to follow the following resolution. Since, it is actually universal and can be applied to any discipline, any field, any sector and by anyone.

I believe, by implementing one or some of the contents in the following resolution, it helps you achieve better performance on your job or career, particularly for you who are working in the field of Sales & Marketing. And moreover, the messages are actually can be also implemented in our daily life. So, although you’re not in the area of sales and marketing, I still believe it suits any business, including our life.

Sales Perspective
- I would really practice the famous three “Driving Principles of Effective Selling” in every interaction with customers; which are “Focus to the Customer”, “Earn the Right to Advance” and “Persuade through Involvement”. Every stages of sales process must refer to those principles.

- Since the God gives me two ears and one mouth, I would always listen carefully to my customers. Listening to customers must be at least twice as much as speaking. Most salesperson love to talk, but knowing when not to, is actually more important.

- I must be master in observing and determining customer needs, wants, desires, whishes, situation and even their problems by a two-to-one listening (active listening) and addressing more open-ended questions. Get high-value information as deep as possible.

- I must be able to list at least two high-gain questions on weekly basis and try to address them to my prospects.

- I must NOT be DEFENSIVE when dealing with an objection. I am mostly defensive when somebody does not agree with my idea and I even try to force the opponent to have the same agreement. This is bad and I want to change it. I must invest my times in learning more on how to encourage and empathize people.

- Follow up promptly. I will do exactly what I said, promised and would. Especially when I am in the stage of building relationship.

Marketing Perspective
- I must continue implementing the value of Driving Principles of Effective Selling in every form of marketing communications. Advertisement, press releases, website information, sales promotion and product information should be tied up with the principle of “Focus to the Customer”, “Earn the Right to Advance” and “Persuade through Involvement”. This means, 1). Information that is offered to the media and public should focus to their agenda and their point of view as well as valuable for the public. 2). I must know the right time to share the information (including when I have to inform only, when I have to call for an action, and when I should emphasize on non-commercial purposes) and 3). The information should trigger and encourage audience to engage in the process of understanding our messages.

- For a powerful press release, I have to make it concise, to the point, and it has to convey useful messages to the public. Ultimately, my press releases must “sell” ideas that meet the public’s interest and needs.

- Sending press releases must be at least once a week and media/editor pitch should be carried out before the press release are disseminated.

- When dealing with journalists, I must focus on them, respect and value their professionalism. Determine their needs and proactively ask them on the most wanted information they seek. Partner with them and thank for their supports.

- To build an integrated marketing communication program, the plan must be based on an empiric-comprehensive market research that focuses on actual market needs, situation and wants. To execute the Marcom plan, it should be consistent and strictly to follow the plan but yet to monitor the media and public reaction, in which, the spirit of “Earning Audience’s Right to Advance” and “Persuading Audience’s Involvement” must become other main focused-points to consider.

- Blast it regularly. I must consistently approach journalists with the spirit of maintaining a stronger field presence than the competition. People do business with people they know and like. And the journalists know me if I am putting my face in front of them over and over again. In the other words, I have to give varied choices of valuable information repetitively.

So, I guess that’s all the resolutions. I hope it is not too much and the most important thing is how we commit to it. Wish me luck!

Belajar Menulis Berita

Selamat membaca:

Tentang Berita (1)
Catatan Kecil untuk Mengenal Penulisan Berita Langsung

Mohammad Iqbal (2)
iqbal_hai@yahoo.com

What is news?

Inilah tekniknya
Bagaimana teknis menulis berita?
